Introduction: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a multifactorial disease that affects children in pre-school age. The consequences of caries on quality of life include pain, decreased appetite, chewing difficulties, weight loss, and change in behavior, and poor performance in school. The purpose of this study was to assess the relation of dental caries between body mass index (BMI) and social well-being in children of age 4-7 years.

Methodology: A randomly selected sample of 600 of the age 4-7 years underwent a clinical oral examination for assessment of dental caries. The samples were divided into two groups: Group A was caries-free children and Group B was assigned to children with ECC. BMI was calculated for children in both the groups. Data were analyzed for association between caries, BMI, and social well-being.

Results: Results showed that in Group A, 1.3% had normal BMI and 98.7% were underweight. In Group B, 0.7% children had normal BMI and 99.3% were found to be underweight. 28.3% of children with ECC had a problem eating food, 39% missed school whereas 31% were ashamed to smile.

Conclusion: There is no significant correlation seen between BMI and prevalence of dental caries in children within the age group of 4-7 years. However, it was seen that ECC had a severe impact on the social well-being of the child.

Background: The prevalence of diseases caused by Candida species has increased in recent years, mainly due to an increase in a number of patients who are immune compromised. The coexistence of Candida species within humans either as commensals or pathogens has been a subject of interest, among physicians. Furthermore, the association of Candida with various precancer and cancer lesions has been reported as a causative agent. A histopathological report of unexpected fungal infection is likely to be acted on clinically and may affect the patient’s management and prognosis. Fungal infection especially that attributable to Candida albicans has been extensively researched in individual lesions, but the aim of this study was to determine how frequently fungal hyphae are detected by the hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain in oral mucosal biopsies submitted routinely for histopathological diagnosis.

Aims and Objectives: The aim and objective of this study is to determine the frequency of fungal infection in biopsies of oral mucosal lesions, namely leukoplakia, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and oral lichen planus (OLP), using H and E and PAS stains.

Materials and Methods: Previously diagnosed biopsy specimen of 20 cases each of different grades of OSCC, oral leuko-plakia, and OLP was taken, and tissue sections were prepared and stained with H and E and PAS stains for the visualization of fungi. The observation of fungal hyphae in the PAS-stained sections was expressed in terms of presence or absence only. After the evaluation of the slides, the results were compiled and subjected to statistical analysis.

Results: The values obtained were found to be more statistically significant with PAS stain than H and E stain (P = 0.016).

Conclusion: The present study shows an increased prevalence of Candidal hyphae in OSCC, followed by leukoplakia and OLP suggestive of Candidal infection which are more easily visualized with PAS reagent than H and E stain.

Clinical Significance: Our study suggests that whenever oral mucosal lesions with dysplastic features are diagnosed and show features of Candidal infection in H and E-stained sections, PAS staining has to performed to confirm Candidal infection and antifungal therapy should be considered in the management of these lesions.

Introduction: Dental caries is an important public health problem, and it is the most prevalent oral disease among children. During the past two decades, increasing levels of dental caries in children and adolescents have been observed in developing countries, in contrast to developed countries. The knowledge, attitude, and practice model of oral health education is often the foundation of most health education programs. Very few studies have been done to assess the level of oral health-related knowledge and the attitudes and practices of children in developing countries. Hence, the present study was undertaken to find out the oral health knowledge, attitude, and practices in 6-12-year-old school-going children of North East Delhi.

Materials and Methods: A total of 700 schoolchildren of age 6-12 years coming from both genders, recruited from primary schools of North East Delhi were evaluated. The World Health Organization Oral Health Assessment Pro forma 2013 was filled by a single examiner after clinical examination of each child. The treatment needs for every child was evaluated and was ascertained after discussion with one of the dental supervisors or cosupervisors.

Results: About 81.14% of children answered that brushing prevents tooth decay and gum disease while 81.42% knew that eating sweets cause tooth decay. 41.42% (male 37.79%:female 45.76%) brushed their teeth once a day, while 54.85% (male 58%:female 51.09%) 2 or more times a day and 3.71% irregularly. 44% used fluoride toothpaste for brushing, 32.85% use plastic toothpicks, 19.71% used dental floss, and 10.4% used chew stick for cleaning teeth and gums.

Conclusion: Approximately 70% of children were afraid of dentist because of possible pain. Almost 96% of children brushed their teeth regularly. Approximately 47% of children visited dentists and the mostly accompanied by mother, father, or both. Most of the children were having basic oral health knowledge.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the oral health of intellectually disabled children with their normal siblings.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 120 school going children aged 6-12 years. The children were divided into three groups. Group 1 - children with Down’s syndrome and their normal siblings, Group 2 - children with cerebral palsy and their normal siblings, and Group 3 - children with autism and their normal siblings. The gingival status of the children was assessed using gingival index (Loe and Silness 1963) and Plaque index (Silness and Loe 1964). The dental caries status was assessed using the WHO scoring criteria.

Results: The overall comparison between intellectually challenged children and their normal siblings showed a highly statistically significant difference with relation to decayed, missing, and filled teeth (P < 0.001) and was statistically significant with relation to plaque index and gingival index (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that there is a high prevalence of gingivitis and dental caries among disabled children. Taking into consideration the multifactorial influence on the oral health status of the disabled population, oral health promotion, modified toothbrushes, and intervention programs should be targeted toward these risk groups.

Aim: The aim of this clinicoradiographic study was to observe changes in position and eruption of unerupted mandibular third molars (M3s) so that decision can be taken whether the M3 in question should be retained or removed.

Materials and Methods: A total of 50 patients of both genders with age group 18-22 years participated in the study. Panoramic radiographs were taken at the time of baseline evaluation and in every 6 months interval until 2 years later under standardized conditions. Radiographic and follow-up periodontal data were included in this analysis. Tracing of radiograph was done to evaluate changes in angular position, eruption status, and root formation of unerupted man-dibular M3.

Results: During 2-year follow-up it was observed that there were statistically significant changes present in sagittal angulation of each type of unerupted mandibular M3 except in distoangular teeth. There was significant number of teeth achieved Level A eruption from Level B and C. The number of teeth with complete root formation increased at the end of the study. There was a significant association between probing depth (PD) and level of eruption.

Conclusion: The result of our study suggested that 53.3% of unerupted mandibular M3 became upright, and 13.3% showed changes toward a vertical position. Among unerupted mandibular M3 20% erupted to Level A from Level B and C. However, PD >4 mm in the M3 region is common clinical finding, limiting the usefulness of these M3 over the lifetime of affected patients. Therefore, regular follow-up with radiographic and clinical checkups is therefore recommended to avoid untoward sequelae when M3s are deliberately retained.

Aim: The current cross-sectional study following the STROBE guidelines was conducted to assess the dentition status and treatment needs among eunuchs residing in Bhopal city, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Materials and Methods: Based on convenient non-probability snowball sampling technique, all the self-identified eunuchs residing in the city of Bhopal who were present at the time of examination and who full filled the selection criteria were examined. A cross-section of the general population (males and females) residing in the same locality where these eunuchs live, was also examined. The WHO oral health assessment pro forma (1997) was used to collect the information on dentition status. All the obtained data were analyzed using software; Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.

Results: The dental caries experience was higher among males (69.7%) compared to females (67.3%) and eunuchs (67.1%). There was no statistically significant difference among the study subjects. However, the overall need for one surface filling was highest (55.4%) among the study subjects. Eunuchs needed a higher number of two surface fillings (21.2%).

Conclusion: The findings of the current study spotlight the higher prevalence of dental caries among eunuch population. There is an urgent need to plan properly to meet the unmet needs of eunuch subjects as it was observed that virtually no care has been provided for this socially deprived community pertaining to oral health.

Introduction: Lifestyle factors are the prime cause for a majority of oral cancer cases. Early diagnosis of oral cancer has become a formidable challenge for health-care professionals due to lack of knowledge and awareness among the population. There is a profound necessity to bring awareness among public on the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of oral cancer. Equally necessary are dental visits and behavior modification because of the fact that oral cancer is largely preventable is not an overstatement.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to know the oral cancer awareness and attitude toward prevention of oral cancer among patients attending a dental institution and to find the influence of socioeconomic status on the awareness and attitude toward oral cancer.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 306 randomly selected adult patients visiting the outpatient department of a teaching dental hospital for a period of 1 week. To assess the patients’ knowledge and attitude, a 13 item structured, self-administered questionnaire was used. Chi-square test and Spearmen correlation tests were used to analyze the data using SPSS Version 20 (P < 0.05).

Results: 65.7% of the samples were males and 34.3% were females. 85.94% of the study population was found to have low or very low knowledge. A significant correlation was observed between levels of socioeconomic status and knowledge levels. In the study population, 33.1% of people have reported habits which can cause oral cancer, among which only 36% of people were interested in quitting the habits on doctors’ advice.

Conclusion: These results give us a heads-up on the cognizable need for the execution of oral cancer awareness programs particularly in the socioeconomically disadvantaged areas which could be an overriding track toward oral cancer prevention.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence and severity of post-endodontic pain (PEP) subsequent to single visit and multiple visit root canal treatment (RCT) in teeth with irreversible pulpitis.

Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study. Participants were all patients (100) who underwent single and multiple visit RCT in teeth with irreversible pulpitis, by one clinician, during 5-month period. Patients were divided into two groups; Group A consist of 50 patients in which single sitting RCT was done while in Group B 50 patients were selected in which multiple sitting RCT was done. Inclusion criteria were all mandibular molar teeth and patients between the age group of 18-35 years. Exclusion criteria were swelling, purulence, and antibiotic use during initial treatment. A structured questionnaire accessed age, gender. Within 24 h of treatment, patients were asked to grade their pain at 6 and 18 h post-treatment, using a 1-5 point scale.

Results: There was no statically significant difference between both groups. However, the post-treatment pain was higher in Group B than Group A.

Conclusion: RCT of teeth with single or multiple sitting statically does not create any difference.

Introduction: Majority of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) occur at school. Teachers are first responders in such situation. There is an utmost need to increase the knowledge of teachers on recommended protocol for emergency management of TDI. The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge and attitude of elementary school teachers on emergency management of TDI.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among 148 elementry school teachers in Darbhanga urban and rural block of Darbhanga district, Bihar (India) in 2017. A pre-tested 20 item questionnaire was used to evaluate the school staff knowledge about management of dental trauma. Each questionnaire composed of three sections: First section comprised of questions related to the personal and professional profile of the participant, second section included questions based on training of the respondents on dental trauma management, assessment of their knowledge, and source of their knowledge, and the third section of the questionnaire consisted questions about management of dental trauma.

Results: Overall 160 teachers were contacted, of which 148 participated in the study and responded to interview questionnaire (response rate - 92.5%). Only 14.9% of respondents have participated in first aid training courses. Merely, 2% of the respondents agreed to be undergone through dental trauma management training course. When question about the management of displaced tooth asked, only 10.8% of respondents gave correct answer. When question about avulsion was asked, 35.1% of respondents told that they would tell the child to bite on a tissue paper to control bleeding. Furthermore, 93.2% of the school staffs were highly interested in attending the traumatized teeth management training courses.

Conclusion: School teachers were found to have a low level of knowledge regarding management of TDIs. Therefore, the school teachers require further training on appropriate emergency management protocols with respect to dental trauma.

Introduction: Chemomechanical caries removal (CMCR) system has been the most intriguing development in minimal invasive dentistry. The fundamental drawback of the drilling approach has remained to be - unpleasantness to the patient, need for local anesthesia, and potential adverse effects to the pulp due to heat and pressure. The CMCR technique on the other hand introduced in 1970, provides the advantage of cooperation from the pediatric patients due to lack of sounds of the drill and flushing of water jet from air rotor.

Aims and Objective: This study was aimed to compare the efficacy of chemomechanical system and conventional rotary system in eliminating the bacteria from the prepared tooth specimen.

Materials and Methods: The study was done on 54 non-carious primary second molars, divided into 2 groups of 27 each. Class 1 cavities were prepared on the specimen and then subjected to a demineralizing agent. Bacterial cultures were introduced into the prepared cavities and incubated. The specimen in Group 1 was subjected to caries removal using low-speed conventional drilling method with spherical carbide bur under water cooling. The specimen in Group 2 was subjected to CMCR system using Carisolv and excavated with Hu Friedy Curette. After caries removal, the specimen in both the groups was inoculated with brain heart infusion incubated and the samples collected. The collected samples were cultured, and colony forming units were determined for total bacterial count.

Statistical Analysis: The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS version 16.0.

Results: Conventional rotary and CMCR yield 28.6% and 30.3% of clean surface, respectively, at 24 h and 29.4% and 33.8% at 48 h (P < 0.001).

Conclusion: The results show that the chemomechanical system is equally effective in bacterial elimination, compared to conventional rotary instruments.

Background: Elastomeric chains are widely used in orthodontics as an active component. Elastics have been an appreciated aid to many types of orthodontic movement for years. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different mouthwashes on the force decay of elasto-meric chains.

Materials and Methods: A total of 60 samples of orthodontic elastomeric chains were used in this study. These were divided into two experimental groups and one control group. Group 1: 20 elastomeric chains in neem mouthwash, Group 2: 20 elastomeric chains in sodium fluoride mouth-wash, and Group 3: 20 elastomeric chains in artificial saliva. These elastomeric chains were fully submerged in the test solutions. The test groups were exposed to the test solutions, for 60 seconds twice daily; force measurements were obtained at 3 times intervals (baseline, 7^th day, and 21^st day). The means of force decayed were analyzed using analysis of variance test to compare between the test groups and the effect of immersion time within each group. Tukey post hoc was used to find out the differences in force decayed. P-value was set at <0.05.

Results: At baseline, sodium fluoride group showed the highest mean force value (289.47 ± 11.22) followed by neem mouthwash (286.32 ± 10.14) and artificial saliva (284.87 ± 10.49). However, there was no significant difference between the groups. On 7^th day and 21^st day, there was a significant difference between the groups. Tukey’s post hoc test showed that there was a statistical difference between Group 1 versus Group 2 and Group 2 versus Group 3.

Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present in vitro study, sodium fluoride mouthwashes could cause more force decay of orthodontic elastomeric chains compared to neem mouthwash.

Background and objectives: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been used in dentistry to improve wound healing. The objective of this study is to analyze the proposed role of LLLT on proliferation of periodontal (PDL) fibroblasts and subsequently the release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).

Study design/materials and methods: Periodontal ligament fibroblast obtained from third molars and the teeth advised for orthodontic extractions were cultured under standard conditions and spread on 96-well tissue culture plates. Laser irradiation was carried out with diode lasers with wavelength 660 nm and fluence of 7.5 J/cm² for 5 minutes per well thrice after every 24 hours. For growth analysis, after 72 hours cell proliferation rate in control (not irradiated) and treated cultures (irradiated) was counted in Neubauer’s chamber. At the same time, IGF-1 release was assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test. Along with this, whether rate of cell proliferation and IGF-1 release is dependent on dosage of laser irradiation was evaluated comparing the intragroup results.

Results: The irradiated cells showed a considerably elevated proliferation rate than the controls. The differences were significant up to 24, 48, and 72 hours after irradiation. Comparison of single, double, and triple dose group with the control group revealed increase in rate of proliferation of PDL fibroblasts, and IGF-1 release significantly.

Conclusion: Low-level laser therapy may play an important role in PDL wound healing and regeneration by enhancing the rate of proliferation and production of growth factors in dose-dependent manner.

Avulsion is complete displacement of tooth out of its socket that result mutilation of periodontal ligament. After the avulsion, the PDL tissues begin to dehydrate. If the PDL attached to the root surface does not dry out, the consequences of tooth avulsion will be minimal. As immediate replantation is not always practically possible at the trauma site, an “interim transport” media often required to maintain the vitality of PDL cell during the extra-alveolar time period. The ideal storage medium should have the capability of preserving the cellular PDL so that the cell could go through the process of mitosis and form clones of the damaged fibroblasts of the PDL and its generating cells. This review summarizes the recent advances and in brief about the newly proposed interim transport media.

Gingival recessions are the most common esthetic problem usually associated with black triangles. It can be well treated with gingival veneer, which is non-invasive and cost-effective method. Gingival veneer is an important choice in periodon-tal conditions where anterior teeth are affected with advanced attachment loss and surgical correction is not a feasible option.

The purpose of this report is to evaluate intermediate restorative material as a root-end filling material and its healing ability over a period of 5 years. X, a 24-year-old female, came to the OPD of RUHS College of Dental Sciences, Jaipur, with a chief complaint of pus discharge from the anterior palatal region for the last 2-3 months. The patient gives a history of trauma 8 years back, but the patient had not reported at that time. 2-3 years after that pus started coming out from labial vestibule with respect to the upper anterior tooth. The patient got done root canal treatment by a dentist at that time. After that patient was asymptomatic for some time, then 2-3 months later patient started having pain and pus discharge from the anterior palatal region. Medical history was not relevant.

The purpose of this case report is to present the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of a 17-year-old female patient who sought treatment for teeth severely affected with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Her teeth showed alterations in enamel thickness, color, and shape, all of which compromised esthetic appearance and masticatory function. Management of such cases requires more than just a restorative approach. The challenge lies in the comprehensive treatment planning and successful execution of the action plan for such patients. Treatment plan comprised of improvement in the patient’s oral hygiene, endodontic and restorative therapy, orthodontic correction of malposed teeth, crown lengthening, and prosthetic rehabilitation. This case report is our successful attempt to rehabilitate the patient for esthetics and function, which has also contributed to increased self-esteem and better quality of life in the patient.

Most common complication following the surgical closure of the cleft palate is oronasal fistula this case report describes a case of oronasal fistula habilitated with an obturator, which had good esthetics and considerable function.

An ocular defect may affect a patient psychologically. An ocular prosthesis is given to uplift the patient psychologically and improve the confidence. Ocular prosthesis can be custom made or a stock shell. To improve the comfort and matching of the prosthesis with that of the adjacent natural eye, a custom-made ocular prosthesis is preferred.

Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth above the normal number. Supernumerary teeth in the premolar region are rarer than in incisor and molar region. There are reports of the increased occurrence of supernumeraries in the maxilla, but supernumerary premolars are more likely to develop in the mandible. This paper reports a rare case of bilaterally impacted supplemental premolar teeth in the mandibular arch of permanent dentition and discusses the etiology, clinical significance, and treatment modalities.

Biocompatible high-performance polymers, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), were introduced as novel dental materials. Due to their acceptable fracture resistance, shock-absorbing ability, and better stress distribution, high-performance polymers are considered as alternative dental materials for metal and glass ceramics. This is important in the restoration of extensively damaged upper central incisor with esthetic concern. Long-term clinical evidence is required before recommending the application as a substitute material.
